Realizing that many of KIT CAR's readers build their own replicas and kits to put on the track, we decided it would be a great idea for KIT CAR's editor to go to driving school. The best high performance driving/racing school that we're aware of is the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. I selected the four-day Grand Prix Racing Course. For the first three days I raced a Corvette Z51 coupe that makes 400 horsepower.
What a scintillating car to race on the Bondurant 1.6-mile course, and an excellent machine to learn about racing, since the car is so well balanced. On the fourth day, I piloted a Formula Ford, open wheel racecar, which is the antithesis of the Corvette. The Ford had about 110 horsepower, a four-speed transmission with no reverse, and four-wheel disc brakes without ABS. The Corvette had Stabilitrack traction control and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Both cars were imminently tossable on the road course, but the Formula Ford was a most twitchy handling. To get the full scoop, you'll need to obtain a copy of the July issue of KIT CAR Magazine, which will first hit newsstands towards the end of May. If you're a subscriber, watch for it in the mail, but don't skip reading the upcoming May issue. There are many great feature articles, tech stories, and one or two event articles to keep your appetite for all things replicar and kit car quelled until the next edition of the magazine!
